Frequency Monitoring Relay
Monitoring relay for measuring electrical-system frequency and detecting when frequency leaves configured limits.
A frequency monitoring relay continuously measures the frequency of the monitored electrical signal and compares it with configured limits.
The device may provide underfrequency, overfrequency, window, and, in specialized versions, rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) monitoring. Thresholds may be specified in hertz or relative to nominal frequency.
Depending on the model, adjustable thresholds, hysteresis, delays, and selection of the number of electrical cycles used for frequency or ROCOF evaluation may be available. Selection criteria include measuring range and nominal frequency, accuracy, setting resolution, hysteresis, detection time, ROCOF support, and output characteristics.
Underfrequency and overfrequency relays, frequency-window relays, ROCOF relays, and multifunction devices whose primary function is electrical-frequency monitoring.
