Current Transformer
Instrument transformer for proportional conversion of a high primary current into a standardized secondary current for measurement or protection.
A current transformer converts primary-circuit current proportionally into a lower secondary current suitable for meters, energy meters, protection devices, and automation systems.
Principal parameters include primary and secondary current, transformation ratio, rated burden, accuracy class, and transformer function.
For protection applications, accuracy limit factor (ALF), instrument security factor (FS), and saturation characteristics may be important. The construction may use a closed or split core and may be intended for cable or busbar installation.
Mechanical selection considers the shape and dimensions of the measuring aperture and the maximum dimensions of the primary conductor or busbar.
Selection criteria include primary and secondary current, accuracy class, burden, measuring or protection function, core construction, window dimensions, and compliance with the relevant parts of IEC 61869.
Measuring and protection current transformers, closed-core and split-core transformers, and cable- and busbar-type designs.
