Measuring Shunt
High-accuracy low-resistance element for measuring electrical current from voltage drop.
A measuring shunt is a precision low-resistance element connected in series with the measured current circuit.
Current is determined from the voltage drop across the shunt according to Ohm's law. Separate potential terminals using a four-wire Kelvin connection may be provided to reduce the effect of power-connection resistance on measurement accuracy.
Principal characteristics include rated current, rated voltage drop, resistance, accuracy class, permissible power dissipation, and temperature stability.
Measuring shunts are used with ammeters, energy meters, control systems, transducers, and data recorders.
Selection criteria include measured current, permissible voltage drop, accuracy class, connection method, thermal conditions, and mechanical construction.
Current-measuring shunts, precision low-ohmic resistors, and shunts with separate potential terminals for Kelvin connection.
