Programmable Logic Controller
Programmable industrial controller intended to execute a user program cyclically or on events, process I/O signals, and control a process or machine.
A PLC executes the user application in a deterministic automation runtime, reads input signals, performs logical and computational operations, and updates outputs. Depending on its architecture, it may provide integrated I/O or operate with local and remote I/O modules.
Important characteristics include CPU architecture, program and data memory, instruction execution times, task organization, scan cycle, watchdog, diagnostics, and online-change capabilities. For modular systems, the internal bus, expansion-module capacity, remote I/O stations, and backplane power budget are also relevant.
Communication may include industrial Ethernet, fieldbus, serial interfaces, and application protocols. Selection criteria include performance, I/O scalability, redundancy, functional safety, engineering environment, and declared compliance with IEC 61131-3 and other applicable standards.
This subcategory includes PLC CPU modules, compact PLCs with integrated I/O, and modular programmable logic controllers whose principal function is execution of a user control program.
