Protocol Gateway
Industrial device for exchanging and converting data between different network, fieldbus, and application protocols.
A protocol gateway acts between systems that do not communicate directly using the same protocol. It may read data from one network, map it to another addressing model, and publish it through a second protocol.
Depending on the model, bidirectional conversion, register/object/tag mapping, scaling, data-type conversion, byte-order conversion, and local exchange rules may be available. Mapping capacity, device count, simultaneous sessions, and update performance are important.
Selection requires verification of supported protocols and roles, physical interfaces, standard versions, mapping-table limits, diagnostics, communication security, and behaviour following loss of communication.
This subcategory includes industrial protocol gateways, fieldbus converters, and data-exchange devices between different automation systems.
