Device description

Automation Controller

Programmable controller for control logic, I/O signal processing, and coordination of automated machines and processes.

An automation controller is a programmable control platform that may combine PLC, motion-control, process-regulation, communication, and edge-computing functions. Depending on the model, it may use a proprietary manufacturer runtime, an IEC 61131-3 environment, or a real-time operating system.

Key characteristics include processor performance, memory, task organization, cycle times, local and remote I/O support, and the number of communication interfaces. Advanced controllers may support time synchronization, redundancy, virtualization, containers, safety functions, and extensive diagnostics.

Selection criteria include system architecture, real-time requirements, I/O scale, protocols, expansion capability, programming environment, and integration with HMI, SCADA, drives, and supervisory systems.
