Star-Delta Starter
Starter that reduces motor starting current by initially connecting the windings in star and subsequently changing to delta.
A star-delta starter is used with motors designed to allow switching of the windings between star and delta connections.
During initial starting the motor operates in star, reducing winding voltage and therefore starting current and torque. After a defined time or condition, the system changes the winding connection to delta for normal operation.
The circuit requires coordinated operation of the main, star, and delta contactors and mandatory interlocking to prevent incompatible contactors from being energized simultaneously.
Selection considers motor operating voltage, availability of six winding terminals, star-running time, transition type, and ratings of the switching and protective equipment.
