Fiber Optic Cable
Cable for transmission of data by optical signals through single-mode or multimode fibres.
A fibre-optic cable contains one or more optical fibres arranged in buffers, tubes, micro-modules, ribbons, or other protective elements. The mechanical construction protects the fibres during installation and service.
The fibres may be multimode OM categories or single-mode OS categories, and their characteristics may additionally refer to applicable ITU-T recommendations. Core, cladding, and coating diameters and the optical properties of the specific fibre type are relevant.
Transmission characteristics include attenuation at defined wavelengths, modal bandwidth for multimode fibre, and chromatic and polarization-mode dispersion for applicable single-mode fibre.
Cable construction defines fibre, tube, and ribbon counts, the presence of a central strength member, and use of aramid yarn. Permissible tensile load and crush resistance are also important mechanical parameters.
Selection criteria include fibre type and category, fibre count, cable construction, operating wavelengths, attenuation, bandwidth, mechanical requirements, and compliance with IEC 60793 and IEC 60794.
Fibre-optic cables for LAN, backbone, telecommunications, industrial networking, and long-distance communication links.
