Device description

Medium-Voltage Power Cable

Screened power cable intended for transmission of electrical energy in medium-voltage networks.

A medium-voltage power cable is intended for networks with rated voltages above the low-voltage range. It is used in distribution systems, feeders, and other power circuits requiring controlled electric-field distribution.

A typical construction includes a conductor screen, main insulation, insulation screen, and metallic screen. This arrangement limits electric-field concentration and provides defined operating conditions for the insulation system.

Depending on the design, additional layers may include a metallic sheath, longitudinal water-blocking elements, or a radial water barrier. Conductor construction and insulation material, such as XLPE or EPR, are also important.

Key electrical characteristics include U₀/U/Um, power-frequency test voltage, impulse withstand, partial-discharge level, and metallic-screen characteristics. Cable capacitance and inductance are also relevant to network design.

Selection criteria include system voltage, load current, short-circuit current, screen construction, grounding arrangement, installation conditions, and moisture-protection requirements.

For typical MV cable designs, declared compliance with IEC 60502-2 and other standards applicable to the specific construction and market is an important selection criterion.
