Bypass Switch
Switching device intended to transfer an electrical circuit to a bypass path around the main equipment or operating section of a system.
A bypass switch is intended to create an alternative electrical path that allows the main switching device, converter, uninterruptible power supply, or another functional unit to be bypassed in specified operating modes.
The bypass may be used during maintenance, repair, testing, or special operating modes. The switch configuration determines the available positions and electrical connections between the normal and bypass paths.
The design may include mechanical or electrical interlocking that prevents impermissible combinations of switching positions. Depending on the version, operation may be manual, motorized, or remote.
Selection criteria include bypass configuration, number and arrangement of poles, rated currents and voltages, utilization categories, switching positions, operating method, interlocking provisions, isolation requirements, and compatibility with the equipment to be bypassed.
This subcategory includes manual and motorized bypass switches, service and operational bypass switching devices, and switches with mechanical or electrical interlocking.
