Portable Residual Current Device
Portable residual-current protective device installed between a power source and a connected load by means of a cable, plug, socket outlet, or other specified connection.
A portable residual current device (PRCD) is intended to provide additional residual-current protection for portable electrical equipment or a temporarily connected load.
The device is normally connected between a supply socket outlet and the load and may include a plug, flexible cable, one or more socket outlets, or a protected wired downstream connection.
Depending on the version, a PRCD can check correct supply wiring, polarity, presence of phase, neutral and protective conductors, and the condition of the protective conductor during operation.
When specified faults are detected, the device may inhibit switching on or automatically disconnect the load. Some versions monitor impermissible external voltage on PE and require manual reactivation after restoration of a previously lost supply voltage.
Selection criteria include plug and socket-outlet type, cable length and construction, residual-current protection characteristics, wiring and protective-conductor monitoring functions, number of protected outputs, operating conditions, and declared compliance with applicable standards.
This subcategory includes portable residual current devices (PRCDs) with plugs, cables, integral socket outlets, or protected output connections, including versions with enhanced monitoring of supply wiring and the protective conductor.
