Device description

Circuit Breaker Incorporating Residual Current Protection

Circuit breaker for industrial or distribution applications with integral residual-current detection and protective tripping functionality.

A circuit breaker incorporating residual current protection (CBR) combines the primary functions of a circuit breaker with an integrated system for detecting and processing residual current.

Depending on its design, the residual-current function may directly actuate the circuit-breaker tripping mechanism, generate a pre-alarm, or support additional monitoring modes.

Advanced devices may measure RMS residual current, separately evaluate AC and DC components, analyse harmonics, and store measured values or information about fault conditions.

For industrial applications, adjustable pre-alarm thresholds, remote tripping, inhibition of the protective output, fail-safe operation, and protection of settings against unauthorized changes may be provided.

Rated residual short-time withstand current and its duration may also be specified, which is important when coordinating the device with other components of a distribution system.

Selection criteria include the circuit-breaker characteristics themselves, residual-current protection characteristics, measurement range, alarm and diagnostic functions, selectivity, and declared compliance with applicable standards.
