Residual Current Monitor
Device for continuous or periodic monitoring of residual current and generation of an alarm when defined conditions are reached.
A residual current monitor (RCM) is primarily intended to monitor the condition of an electrical installation on the basis of residual-current magnitude.
Unlike a protective device, the main function of an RCM may be measurement and signalling without directly and automatically opening the monitored power circuit. The system response after an alarm signal depends on the design of the specific device and the external control arrangement.
An RCM may use an integral or external residual-current sensor, one or more alarm thresholds, adjustable time delays, hysteresis, relay or analog outputs, and communication interfaces.
Advanced versions may provide the numerical value of measured residual current, event memory, pre-alarm, and diagnostic functions.
Selection criteria include measurement range, sensor type, number of channels and thresholds, output characteristics, timing settings, installation conditions, and declared compliance with applicable standards.
This subcategory includes residual current monitors (RCMs) for signalling, measurement, and monitoring of insulation condition and leakage currents in electrical circuits.
